Mike Gunn
MIKE GUNN - Almaron
Vinyl version of 3rd album by this Houston, Texas band released on CD by Double Naught. One long extra track (15 min.). Excellent blend of modern American psych acid rock (Monster Magnet, Butthole Surfers), early 70ies British hard rock (Steamhammer, Black Sabbath), even small bits of Southern/West Coast rock (Allman Bros., Crosby Stills Nash and Young? - that is for you to find out). MIKE GUNN - A dream about Jim
"Posthumous" release that demonstrates the band's energetic, dynamic, hypnotic "floating twin-guitar glory" (just listen to "Mason"!), their openness to experiment, their jamming improvisations, their sarcasm and sense of humour. This 10" consists of studio recordings made with the original "Almaron"-lineup: __Curt "Almaron" Mackey__ ( drums), whose mysterious departure marked the end of The Mike Gunn, __John "Crevasse" Cramer__ (guitar, vocals, organ), __Tom Carter__ (guitar on "Mason"), now playing with Charalambides, and __Scott Grimm__ (bass, drones, guitar, vocals), now active with Dunlavy. __Side 1__ Intense, rockin? songs typical for the Mike Gunn, with a rougher edge, a fine jamming interlude and lyrics that refer to the band's background. __Side 2:__ A 9-min. song that reaches at ist peak _Neil Young-ish dimensions_, followed by a prog rock experiment and, last, a weird Led Zep adaptation. All in all, around 32 min. long. Housed in a pretty ugly paste-on cover. 10
